PageRank Sharing SEO Tactics

This article is geared towards PageRank and how to share the rank with other pages through proper hyperlink use and how it works.

Every SEO expert talks about relevant keywords and Anchor text, and if your website is relevant to the website linking to your page, you will get PageRank sharing with your website. But most people think relevant is, oh look this page is about homes, and since my page is about selling homes, this must be relevant. Sadly this is not how it works.  An easy way to see if a website is relevant to yours, is to check the websites Keywords and Description. If none of the keywords or description keywords match what you type in the hyper-link to your page, you will not get an increase or sharing of PageRank.  

Note – It is still good for you to pick websites that are similar to yours to get a link from. Chances are, if a person is on a website about homes, they will most likely click on another link about homes. This way you will actually get visitors from the page instead of just some PageRank.

The only way to check and see what the keywords and descriptions is by going to the website you want to link from or to, and look on the top left screen of your browser. Now look for the View menu, and click page source.

Now you are going to get a page with a bunch of Web coding gibberish. But you want to search through this and find the description and the keyword Tags. (if you did this on my website I feel sorry for you, since I have yet to clean up the code)

You want to find <meta name="Keywords"     And <meta name="description"  Here’s what they look like – and they are usually near the top of the screen.

In most cases the keywords can go on for a long time, but you want to make sure you have some of the same keywords located in the Keywords or description, in the link from the website to your website. You also want to use the keywords the exact same way they are listed, such as Caps or lowercase in the link title to your page.

Note – Caps and Lowercases for keywords are different in search engines, if you type in SEO and then type in seo you will get different search results.

An Example link from my page that would share my pagerank would be

SEO Traffic Tips and Tweaks      or you could do   News in Laymen terms

Because the links have the same keywords as the ones used in my descrription and keywords you get a PageRank Boost.

An advaned encoding for links, is to add an Alt Title tag to the link. If you are using Wordpress you can click Source on the post input box. You then want to locate the hyperlink – if you were linking to howbits.com it will look like this <a href="http://www.howbits.com">Howbits</a>   

Once you have this hyperlink you want to add the title=" code before the href part of the code, and you use for example Howbits SEO and SEM Tips

<a title="Howbits SEO and SEM Tips" href="http://www.howbits.com>Howbits</a>    (Make sure you use the " at the beginning and the end of the title just like I have done)

Now if you hover your mouse over this Howbits Link and leave your mouse for a second you will see the Alt title tag appear.

This adds a little more keywords to the hyperlink, and paints a clearer image to search engines and tells it what the likely content of this page will be about on the other side of the link. You do not want to keyword stuff this with 5 or more keywords. There is a negative effect of making a page or link to Search Engine Friendly.

Some advanced practices on your website.

Whenever I write an article or post, I go and edit my keywords and include a keyword or two in it from the title of that post. This way I make sure that the page gets shared PageRank from my main page. To do this is fairly simple in wordpress, that is if your using All in one SEO plugin. Just click options in wordpress backoffice, then All in one SEO, then add to your home keywords, and make sure to comma separate each new keyword. That’s all you need to do.  I also recommend adding keywords from a hyperlink that you have to your website. So if you made the hyperlink, Using an earlier example SEO Traffic Tips and Tweaks, make sure you have 1, 2, or all of the keywords from the link in your keywords such SEO Traffic Tips Tweaks.

Note  -  And, the, is, a, an, of, is, etc.,  do not count as keywords and will be ignored, so it is just wasted space to use them.

    Ya it doesn't mean much, but it's still good practice to use, and carries some weight, but very small. The strongest SEO of the link is whats written between the anchor tag such as a href="link">Information here<

    A good example is http://ultimatetaxi.com/pics/aspen.htm

    If you look at the links, before 2007 (this hasn't been updated yet in google pagerank), you will notice that only pages with a hyperlink to them with corresponding meta keywords in it get pagerank shared to them. There are are about 4 or 5 on the entire list of links that have developed their own page rank, but it's lower number than the ones that have borrowed the pagerank. But the hyperlink titles that do not have a keyword used in it, there is no pagerank sharing.

    I have witnessed this on other websites, and the only conclusion I have been able to draw is that pagerank will be shared with hyperlinks and title text, that matches the keywords in the html meta data.
  • I am going to have to disagree. I do not have any basis besides just a knee jerk reaction and not believing there is any correlation to the link and the meta tags.

    The point is link relevancy. The link's relevancy is drawn from the content. If the site is about world travel and it links to a an airline page that is relevant.

    Choosing relevant anchor text to the page landed is the most important factor. The difference between "SEO Traffic Tips and Tweaks or you could do News in Laymen terms" is huge. They are different topics all together and aren't relevant to the page being pointed too.

    Using the title attribute in a link doesn't mean much either. The potential for spamming is to high. It will be discarded if it hasn't already just like the alt tag in images for seo reasons. I use both because they should be used for basic usability and offer very little SEO credit. A couple years ago the story may have been different.
