Yes, 54 million dollars is an absurd number for a lost laptop. The woman who is suing even admits it’s, but the reason she supposedly picked such a large number was to embarrass Best Buy and make them change their ways. Such as getting them to change their privacy policy to protect against possible consumer Identity theft and personal property loss.

Although Campbell’s situation is an unusual one, it makes sense for Best Buy to take extra steps to protect its customers’ privacy by offering ID theft protection services, said Paul Stephens, director of policy and advocacy with Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, a privacy advocacy group that tracks data breaches. "We’re talking about a loss of something that’s been entrusted to them," he said. "As a bare minimum, they should be doing that."

It appears that geek squads mis-doings, such as stealing porn off of consumer computers, and leaving phones on in video record mode, in the bathroom, while people are taking a shower, are old concerns. I guess now you need worry about your computer ending up lost. You know how these best buy stores are so big, and the computer repair area’s are enormous, it’s easy to misplace a little computer.

Now the really sad part of this is, Best Buy most likely won’t change a thing. If this lawsuit even makes it to a court, which I doubt, I can guarantee that this case will be tossed out. Best Buy will most likely get a better insurance policy against stolen and lost items, and charge customers more money for computer repair, because of the increase in insurance coverage.

So in the end, the consumer takes it in the shorts, but look on the bright side, you have multiple choices for what your gift card will look like in the event of a "Lost" computer.
