  • SEO Addon Domains / Subdomains

    21

This article is about the use of Folders vs Add-on Domains, also referred to as Subdomains, and the advantages and disadvantages of SEO and PageRank for both.

Naysayers – Web SEO Guru Idiots

Many web gurus will argue that search engines will see that the IP address is the same for each website and will put the website together in search results, and not split them out. If this were true, then hundreds of websites that are on shared hosting, that have the same IP address,  would be searched and indexed as one website. Another fact against what these web gurus think, is that if this were true, then why do the major websites such as Google, MSN, Yahoo, etc. Practice this for their websites?? If you type in Google in a search engine you will see a long list of results for Google, such as news.google.com, maps.google.com, help.google.com, and the list goes on and on.

Folder Domain – Pros and Cons

When I say folders I am referring to folders that are one level higher on the site root. An example is http://howbits.com/examplefolder/.

    Pros

    1. When using folders you get more content for your website. Each folder, and whatever is in the folder is consider content for the main site, so if I make howbits.com/news/, well anything that ends up in the News folder is more content for my website and everyone knows Content is king. Search Engines love websites with a lot of content, so this of course will increase my ranking in search results
    2. PageRank is shared with the folders of the website, so whatever my PageRank is in Howbits.com, chances are if the links are built right, then any content in the news folder will get the rank share.
    3. Folders are easier to maintain then Add-on Domains, because they are still part of the main website.
    4. If the websites are linked correctly, you can get an indented listing using the main website with good SEO, and then connecting to another page with poor ranking, but the ranking can ride on the ranking of the main website and thus get better search results by proxy.

    A. All invented by women.

    Q. What is the only food that doesn’t spoil?

    A. Honey

    Q. Which day are there more collect calls than any other day of the year?

    A. Father’s Day

In Shakespeare’s time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase……… "goodnight, sleep tight."

It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride’s father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month. Or as we know it today as the honeymoon.

In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts. So in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them "Mind your pints and quarts, and settle down."

It’s where we get the phrase "mind your P’s and Q’s"

Many years ago in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the rim, or handle, of their ceramic cups. When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service.

"Wet your whistle" is the phrase inspired by this practice.

    Squirrel Away!
To keep squirrels from eating your plants sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn’t hurt the plant and the squirrels won’t come near it.

    No More Mosquitoes
Place a dryer sheet in your pocket. It will keep the mosquitoes away.

    Good-bye Fruit Flies
To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass fill it 1/2" with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dishwashing liquid and mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!

    Get Rid of Ants
Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it "home," & can’t digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so,  esp. if it rains, but it works & you don’t have the worry about pets or  small children being harmed!

    Newspaper keeps weeds away
Start putting in your plants, then wet some newspapers and put layers around the plant overlapping as you go cover with mulch / Dirt and forget about weeds. Weeds will go through some gardening plastic, but  they will not get through wet newspapers.

    Reheat Pizza
Heat up leftover pizza in a nonstick skillet on top of the stove, set heat to med-low and heat till warm.
This keeps the crust crispy.. No soggy microwave pizza. I saw this on the cooking channel and it really works.

    Easy Deviled Eggs
Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they are all broken up.
Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing it up , mixing thoroughly .
Cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw bag away when done easy clean up.

    Expanding Frosting
When you buy a container of cake frosting from the store, whip it with your mixer for a few minutes.
You can double it in size. You get to frost more cake/cupcakes with the same amount.
You also eat less sugar/calories per serving.

    Reheating refrigerated bread
To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in a microwave with a cup of water, a glass cup works best.
The increased moisture will keep the food moist and help it reheat faster.

    Measuring Cups
Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill it with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don’t dry the cup.
Next, add your ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out.

  • Optimizing Database – Avoid Exceeded CPU Quota

    3

This guide is short and sweet and to help people optimize and speed up their WordPress websites, or a Database driven website such as Joomla, Drupal, etc, and to avoid a possible Account has Exceeded it’s CPU Quota screen from their Webhost. These simple steps will keep your website running smooth, and make the website more responsive which results in a happier surfing experience for your visitors. If you run WordPress you should have no reason for not keeping your Database Optmized, seeing as there is a plugin that does it for you in a few seconds. The only technical aspect of using the plugin is to download it and activating it in your WordPress Back office.

    Example Webhost Message:

hostmoster 02 Optimizing Database Avoid Exceeded CPU Quota

If you are currently experiencing this problem, just follow these steps and then wait for your website to be available again. This is result of your Database getting congested, to large in size, not optimized, or it has several errors not allowing the database to function properly all of which will take more CPU power from the computer that is hosting it. Most, if not all, shared webhosters will cut you off if you website is taking to much of the computers processing power. Read more

  • Beginner’s Guide To SEO

    0

A free SEO guide from SEOmoz.com, that I read when I was first getting started in SEO and I highly recommend it. I recently found it on my harddrive when I was searching for another Document. I didn’t find the document I was looking for, but I found this guide that really gave me a boost in the right direction in SEO. I highly recommend reading it, if you are interested in Search Engine Optimization. There is nothing you need to buy, just select the way you want to read it and your good to go

Here is an exert from the 9 page beginner guide -

    Speed Bumps & Walls

Certain types of navigation may hinder or entirely prevent search engines from reaching your website’s content. As search engine spiders crawl the web, they rely on the architecture of hyperlinks to find new documents and revisit those that may have changed. In the analogy of speed bumps and walls, complex links and deep site structures with little unique content may serve as "bumps." Data that cannot be accessed by spiderable links qualify as "walls."

Possible "Speed Bumps" for SE Spiders:

    • URLs with 2+ dynamic parameters; i.e. http://www.url.com/page.php?id=4&CK=34rr&User=%Tom% (spiders may be reluctant to crawl complex URLs like this because they often result in errors with non-human visitors)
    • Pages with more than 100 unique links to other pages on the site (spiders may not follow each one)
    • Pages buried more than 3 clicks/links from the home page of a website (unless there are many other external links pointing to the site, spiders will often ignore deep pages)
    • Pages requiring a "Session ID" or Cookie to enable navigation (spiders may not be able to retain these elements as a browser user can)
    • Pages that are split into "frames" can hinder crawling and cause confusion about which pages to rank in the results.

    Possible "Walls" for SE Spiders:

    • Pages accessible only via a select form and submit button
    • Pages requiring a drop down menu (HTML attribute) to access them
    • Documents accessible only via a search box
    • Documents blocked purposefully (via a robots meta tag or robots.txt file)
    • Pages requiring a login
    • Pages that re-direct before showing content (search engines call this cloaking or bait-and-switch and may actually ban sites that use this tactic)

The key to ensuring that a site’s contents are fully crawlable is to provide direct, HTML links to each page you want the search engine spiders to index. Remember that if a page cannot be accessed from the home page (where most spiders are likely to start their crawl), it is likely that it will not be indexed by the search engines. A sitemap can be of tremendous help for this purpose.

  • Fix For Gmail Pop3 Setup

    0

I recently setup a Gmail account via pop3, and I had an issue with it not being able to download my messages on multiple computers. The reason I choose to use Pop3 and not Imap, was for one simple reason.,I own two laptops and several times I am working on my computer and I am unable to connect to the internet but I still want to go through my downloaded emails and replyto them, and when I get connected to internet, all my emails go out then.

The problem that I had was, my emails were not downloading. Once my email program checked Gmail for the latest emails, no other computers were able to retrieve the email. I found a fix for this while surfing around the internet, so I decided to post the fix here for anyone else that might have the problem.

To fix it, all you need to do is add recent: in front of your username. Make sure to put the colon at the end of recent.

    Example – recent:email@gmail.com

It tells Gmail to resend your latest email to you. One downside of using this, is that when you send a message you will get a duplicate sent emails. So if this really bothers you, you can just make a email rule and have it delete any of these duplicate sent messages.

Hope this helps some people out.
