1. Don't buy large backlink packages, it is best to do backlink building in a steady manner. If a search engine sees 5000 or more new backlinks coming to a website, they will know these are unnatural backlink growth and will not give you a boost in ranking. Slow and steady link building and growth is considered by search engines to be the normal / natural way a website should grow on the internet. I recommend doing at least 100 solid backlinks but no more than 500 backlinks per month.

2. If you are hiring someone to do backlinks for you, ALWAYS ask them to show examples of the backlinks and make sure they are not submitting to directories. Directory backlinks are all but worthless. It sounds nice to have 200+ new backlinks coming to your website, but if these are directory backlinks they are worthless – 100 backlinks from directories is equal to about 1 good link from a relevant website that is linking back to your website. So avoid directories for backlink building.

   If you still feel like you want to get your website into as many directories as you can, just make an account with submitterbot.com and do the directory submissions yourself. It's easy to do and you just need to sit at your computer and select categories and submit.

3. Social Bookmarking – Social bookmarking is a good idea, but the majority of social bookmarking websites use this link code – rel=nofollow – which means the links from their website that go to your website are not indexed or counted by search engines because the search engines are told to not follow/index the link. There are a few Social websites that don't use nofollow coding, but the standard practice is to use it.

   The reason why social bookmarking is nice is for one simple fact, they have better ranking than directories, index on an hourly / minutely basis because search engines love to crawl and index them for new updated content. What this means for you is, if you bookmark a post on your website and use a good title with your keywords, the post on the social bookmarking website will be visible in the search engines and will have decent or good ranking in the search engines depending on the quality of the social bookmarking website.

   So you may not get a backlink from the website that increases you ranking, but if you use correct keywords and good descriptions, people will find your bookmarks and they will come to your website. But don't go overboard on social bookmarking, just make sure you use websites like submitterbot.com for social bookmarking and if you are a content based website always remember to use socialmarker.com when you have an article you wish to spread around the internet. Socialmarker.com is the best way I know to build backlinks from social bookmarking websites. Another good suggestion is to keep your pinging services updated on your website. Whenever you add a post to wordpress, joomla, etc. you can set them to ping services to come crawl your website and get updated information.

4. Forum posting , profiles with signature links, wordpress commenting, article submissions, are some of the best ways to build backlinks, especially if the websites are relevant to the content of your website. If you're planning to farm out the exercise of link building, which I recommend doing, make sure you find a good link builder who will create links by one of these backlink building practices.

5. PageRank linkbuilding – Pagerank means nothing for a website ranking, but with that being said you don't want to have backlinks from a website that suddenly disappears and no longer exists like many websites do. PageRanking takes month to achieve, it is slow to update. So if a website has a good pagerank, chances are the website has been around a long time and is not going anywhere. So it is a safe bet that if you get a backlink on this website, that backlink will stay active and alive for a long time to come.

6. Avoid bad backlink builders – It was a common practice for a fair amount of time for link builders to buy up domains or create subdomains and then link to their clients website from these subdomains. The subdomains had no ranking, were junk website, and soon enough search engines would have these websites banned and labeled as link farms. With that being said, bad link builders still do this, so if you think you are working with a bad link builder who does this, always request a list of links they have built for you. Check the websites for PageRank, Check the age of the website the link is coming from, and most importantly, verify that the website is not a link farm and that it does have ranking on google and is not banned.

With this list of advice and tips, you should be well on your way to building quality backlinks that will benefit your website and continue to bring your website up through the rankings in search engines.

Every 30 days I print out a list of backlinks from Google Webmaster and check to verify the links I am buying and to ensure the new backlinks are of quality, strength and will actually benefit my websites.
